August 2010: PSV Glass adds 5 'Extra Height' SDVs to Fleet

With many of the latest generation of luxury coaches having windscreens over 2M tall, PSV glass has added an additional 5 new extra height Service Delivery Vehicles (SDVs).

These extra height SDVs will play a role in safely delivering, to Specialist Glass Installation Companies, the tallest windscreens European coach manufacturers have to offer, either now or in the future.

Two will be based in High Wycombe, two will be based in Manchester and one will be based in Glasgow, and to differentiate them on the virtual GPS tracking monitor at the High Wycombe headquarters of PSV Glass, they will be colour coded from the rest of the fleet.

The additional vehicles now take the fleet to over 100.

March 2010: GPS Tracking of PSV Glass Delivery Vehicles

Using sophisticated virtual GPS tracking, PSV Glass is increasing productivity by the real-time monitoring of our fleet of service delivery vehicles (SDVs). The equipment has allowed us to plan efficient routes and work schedules which in turn have resulted in shortening journey times and reducing fuel consumption.

With a clear visualisation of every journey route, a guaranteed assurance can be offered to our customers, who may be expecting the delivery of an urgent glass part - a near accurate ETA.

A spin-off benefit has been to assist drivers to unfamiliar locations and the detailed reporting has made fleet management more effective.

Feb 2007, Plaxton Appoints PSV Glass

Plaxton Limited, UK’s largest coachbuilder, has signed a distributor agreement with PSV Glass for the full and exclusive distribution of Plaxton OEM glass products. The new arrangements mark a major step forward for customers with Plaxton vehicles; expanding the distribution network will improve the availability of genuine original equipment glass, available fitted from Bus & Coach Glazing, but now directly distributed from PSV Glass.

Commenting on the deal, Matt Shenton, General Manager Plaxton, remarked, “By its very nature glass is among the most vulnerable areas of any vehicle. Damage is unfortunate but an accepted risk nonetheless. With approaching 20,000 Plaxton vehicles in operation around the world, our priority is to keep them where they belong -on the road. PSV Glass has shown that a dedicated glass service does provide a faster, more efficient option for the customer to do just that.”

“Giving PSV Glass distribution rights to the OEM glass parts range, covering all our coach and small bus models manufactured in the last 12 years, has ensured our customers get the fastest response available and from the clear leader in the field.”

PSV Glass is Europe’s leading glass distributor. Established almost 20-years ago, they are a specialist supplier to the PCV industry, currently stocking over 78,000 windscreens, body glass and framed units.

Established almost a century ago, the Plaxton name has become a staple of the passenger transport industry in Britain and beyond. The large number of Plaxton buses and coaches in service around the world is testimony to the engineering which goes into every one of them.

November 2006 - PSV Glass at the Euro Bus Expo 2006 exhibition

I shouldn’t think anyone attending last weeks Euro Bus Expo 2006 exhibition at the NEC – the biggest and best yet - could have failed to notice the innovative and impressive PSV Glass show stand - not least because it was positioned right in front of the entrance of Hall 5!

The stand portrayed a pleasing, open and informal ambience, and gave our visitors a friendly and relaxed opportunity to meet all our team (see photographs below).

At the show we took the opportunity to:

  • Officially launch this web-site
  • Released details of a distribution agreement between ADL and PSV Glass (see below and photographs)
  • Launched our increasingly popular and cost-effective, pre-filmed glass scheme
  • Presented our tried and tested Glass Solutions Program

We had a fantastically busy time and were rewarded by the many approving and complimentary comments made by visitors, in particular of the PSV Glass service they had experienced throughout the past year.

We are now looking forward to next year’s exhibition where there will be many more pleasant surprises in store from Europe’s leading supplier of replacement glass to the passenger carrying vehicle industry

November 2006 - ADL glass deal gives cutting edge to aftermarket operations

Alexander Dennis Limited has struck a partnership agreement that gives PSV Glass full and exclusive distribution rights to support ADL vehicles in the UK and Eire with replacement glass products.

Arthur Whiteside, ADL’s Aftermarket Director, commented: “Our aim is to constantly improve services and to make life easier for our customers. After a major review of the technical and logistical issues surrounding the supply of replacement glass products we concluded that a dedicated service would provide a faster, more efficient route.

“We then undertook an exhaustive review of the market and concluded that there was real synergy between our objectives and those of PSV Glass. As a consequence, we have now concluded an exclusive arrangement to work with them. This gives PSV distribution rights to our previous and current product ranges, including ALX, Pointer, President, Prestige, Palatine and Enviro.

“The benefits of this approach are many-fold but, notably, include reduced lead times and access to OEM approved products. There are also the advantages of order processing through a dedicated call centre supported by specialist, technical advisers”.

July 2006 - Filming Convention

London operators, representing both bus and rail, along with TfL visited PSV Glass to consider the options available to help them tackle the endemic problem of scratched graffiti on glass. The team reviewed the current one-dimensional practice of polyester film application and were later presented with the latest, cost saving pre-cut 'peel and stick' film and pre-filmed glass solutions. Finally the team took a peek into the future by looking at the current research, led by PSV Glass, into the innovative developments taking place to combat this particular crime wave.

June 2006 - Bombardier Meeting

Bombardier Transportation, along with many of its customers, paid a visit to PSV Glass in High Wycombe to agree to a revised glazing procedure for Electrostar and Turbostar trains. The visit culminated in the actual breaking of a window in a Turbostar body side section and, following the new agreed procedure, replacing with a new window.

June 2006 - CPT Meeting

PSV Glass hosted a CPT Engineering Committee meeting. The purpose was to investigate what is technically possible in improving the safety performance of glass. Two papers were presented - the first considered increased penetration resistance of larger coach windscreens; the second highlighted the conflicting benefits between laminated and toughened glass for use in coach body sideglass.

Windscreens - Their Role in Penetration Resistance and Occupant Security

Laminated Coach Bodyside Windows - To Consider Their Role in Occupant Retention ref EU R66 Roll over Regulations

April 2006 - PSV Glass announce the addition of two new Directors to the board.

Nigel McClune, pictured on the right, is promoted to Sales Director and now heads up the UK sales team. Nigel began his career in the computer industry specialising in logistics and was one of the original management team joining PSV Glass in 1989.

David Best is promoted to Purchasing Director, having joined in 2001, following over 20 years working in the Bus and Coach Industry, with previous managerial positions at MCW and Carlyle.

Welcoming both on board, Nik Andrews, Commercial Director, commented that – “PSV Glass is currently going through an exciting period of growth and these appointments will strengthen our management team thus ensuring that we are even better placed to meet the increasing demands for replacement glass products from the Passenger Carrying Vehicle Industry”.

2005 - PSV Glass announce the opening of a Scottish Distribution Centre (SDC)

To complement our very busy Scotland delivery schedules, a vast customer support facility was officially opened at East Kilbride in July to take up the volume capacity of glass stocks needed to support customer’s vehicles for many years to come. The facility also accommodates technical service teams and sales support personnel responsible for providing local assistance to Scottish customers.

At the inaugural opening week, customers were given the chance to see the ‘behind the scenes’ activity of how PSV Glass process an order, pick the right parts and activate delivery, being always mindful of the customer’s timetable for getting a vehicle returned to service fast, following a glass breakage event.

Additionally, our Scottish customers throughout the central region will now enjoy all the benefits of a same day delivery service.

Earlier News

The Fire Service Inspectorate (FSI) requested PSV Glass to facilitate a demonstration of the timed breaking into laminated body sideglass to enable them to assess hazards and problems that could be encountered in an emergency evacuation incident.

Laminated bodyglass has been used in new trains built since privatisation to provide containment of passengers in the event of an accident. It was these windows that the FSI needed to ensure that they could access from the outside. Samples of each of the glass construction types, as used in all new trains, were prepared for the test by PSV Glass.

Representatives from the principal ROSCOs and TESCOs and from HMRI, RSSB, and Network Rail witnessed a practical demonstration by the FSI breaking into each of the sample windows using their tools and equipment, at the PSV Glass workshops in High Wycombe.

Recommendations and a DVD of the demonstration were circulated to Fire Brigades throughout the UK.
